How to screen porous silica substrates for fluoride-removal functionalisation

In short: Treat the porous silica as a candidate substrate, not as an adsorbent: functionalise it with your own chemistry, run batch adsorption on a real or synthetic effluent against a reference medium, and only then move to a column. What you need

  • Your functionalisation chemistry and the procedure to apply it
  • Substrate sample set: CENSIL 320 plus 310 and 500 as comparisons
  • A reference adsorption medium you already use or benchmark against
  • Fluoride ion-selective electrode or ion chromatography, shaker, filtration, and later a small column

Step by step

  1. Characterise the untreated substrate first

    Run the raw silica through your own surface and pore characterisation so that later changes can be attributed to the functionalisation. Keep a sample of each untreated grade as the baseline.

  2. Functionalise all three grades identically

    Apply the same chemistry, ratio, temperature and washing to each grade in the same session. The comparison is between substrates, so the treatment must not be a variable.

  3. Run batch adsorption against the reference

    Shake a fixed mass of each functionalised substrate with the effluent at the pH the plant actually runs, alongside the reference medium, and measure residual fluoride at set times. Report the reference result in the same table — that is what makes the screening readable.

  4. Check the effect of competing ions

    Industrial effluents carry sulphate, phosphate and bicarbonate that compete for sites. Repeat the batch test on the real effluent, not only on a synthetic fluoride solution.

  5. Move the best candidate to a column

    Pack a small column with the leading functionalised substrate and run breakthrough at a realistic flow. Batch capacity and column performance diverge, and the column is what the plant will see.

  6. Test regeneration before deciding

    Regenerate with the eluent you intend to use and re-run the column. A substrate that performs once and collapses on regeneration is a consumable, not a treatment step.

Mistakes that spoil the comparison

  • Reading removal on the untreated silica and treating it as a result.
  • Screening on synthetic solution only and skipping the real effluent.
  • Claiming a discharge limit from batch data.

Does CENSIL silica remove fluoride on its own?

No claim is made for the untreated material. The porous grades are candidate substrates for a treatment developer's own functionalisation and screening programme.

Why three grades?

Surface development and pore volume differ across 310, 320 and 500, and the screening is meant to show which substrate your chemistry works best on.
